BOXER SPOTLIGHT: BERTHA IIBertha II is an owner surrender looking for a new home.Hi! My name is Bertha II! I am a beautiful 7 year old brindle girl that is an owner surrender due to my owner not having the time or ability to care for me. I am bonded with my littermate, Rocky, and need to be adopted together which means double the boxer love! I am described as friendly, active, smart, protective, playful, and affectionate! I live with my littermate Rocky and we get along great! If I meet other dogs I do not know, I am reactive until I connect with them. I do not live with a cat so it is uncertain if I am feline friendly. There are no children in my home but I have had exposure to a 4 year old and am said to be kid friendly! I am house trained, crate trained, eat Instinct raw dog food, and at night I sleep on a dog bed in the living room. If the humans must be away, I am fine with other dogs to keep me company. When outside I have great behavior and do not dig or attempt to jump fences/gates. Some of my favorite things are riding in the car, a ball, and giving & receiving affection! Success Story - Elvis (ABR Ansel)This is a success story, though it may not sound like it at first. We lost our dog Kazak (ABR Rhett, 2016) in August 2024 and it was a real heartbreaker for everyone, but maybe most of all for his sister, Zuzu (ABR Garnet, 2021). Zuzu missed her brother desperately and in October 2024 we welcomed Hugo (ABR Hartman) into our home. Hugo was a shy sweet boy but was having a hard time settling and we weren’t able to help him feel at home with us, even with a trainer, and in March 2025, we made the difficult decision to surrender him back to ABR so he could be rehomed. That was also a real heartbreaker. But this is a success story, I promise. We wanted to take a minute to let some of that heartbreak heal over, but I was still keeping my eyes on ABR adoption roster. We’re in Houston and had driven to Austin to meet Hugo and ultimately drove him back there, so this time we were looking for a dog located in Houston. In early July 2025, we met a dog in Katy (shoutout ABR Orford) but he and Zuzu just didn’t click. Just as my husband and I were trying to figure out if we should try another meeting with Orford, I saw him—our Elvis (ABR Ansel). He was in Houston but was recovering from an eye removal surgery, so we’d need to wait to meet him until he was more healed (shoutout to his amazing foster family who nursed him through that). My first boxer, Zoe, had to have her eye removed near the end of her life, so I knew that dogs adapt pretty well to only having one eye and we couldn’t wait to meet him. His wonderful foster momma drove him to us so he and Zuzu could meet. It was a match, and we’re arrived at our success story, as promised.Elvis was shy (IS shy) but he has gained a lot of confidence over the last year. He is still mostly scared on a walk, but is brave when Zuzu is there with him; and while he doesn’t love a walk around the neighborhood, he patrols the yard with gusto and is the most accomplished one-eyed lizard catcher in TX. He loves a tummy rub, is starting to excel at cuddling, and wags his tail more than I ever thought he would. I told you, this is a success story. I’m so grateful to the ABR network—the adoption coordinator, the vet partners, and the fosters—the work y’all do to support boxers in Texas (and the families that love them) is amazing—thank you. One last thing, I heard that Hugo was also adopted this past year (maybe a foster fail) and that made my heart so happy to know that he found his forever home.
