This big fella is Herbie. He is down to 83 pounds as of 10/9/20 and has come even further to a safe foster home. Herbie and his bff were surrendered to a shelter when their family divorced. Herbie was the dependent one and when his bff started beating him up ABR had to separate them for their safety. ABR tries very hard to keep bonded pairs together, but safety comes first. Herbie stopped eating for a bit, and only ate tiny, little bits in his foster home for several days. This morning, 10/9, he joined his 2 new Boxer friends to eat breakfast; without any coaxing, just a little reassurance. Then all 3 ran outside together.

His demeanor is gradually changing from scared and sad to inquisitive and happy with a wagging tail. He is only 2 years old and has a long, long road ahead of him to get to a comfortable 70-75 pounds and gain the confidence to stand on his own, but he is eager to be part of his pack and part of his foster family. He is about as sweet as they come and very unsure. It seems he wants to please but hasn’t been taught what is expected, so he gets anxious and scared as though he has been scolded and hit for not complying. Calm direction, reassurance and praise, and watching his new buddies all help him.

Herbie is heartworm negative and just completed all his tests and vaccinations with no problems at all. He has a beautiful fawn coat with a black mask and very expressive eyebrows on his bear cub face. He does not live with cats or kids but he is dog friendly and pretty even keeled through all the changes. It is very rewarding to watch him run and play with his new friends. Herbie is firmly on his journey to a new forever family.
